The Blobs

The Blobs

This was a Wednesday afternoon animated series for young children on ITV. Jane did all the voices. I first heard about it from Paul Persen, who also got me a tape with a few episodes on it. Thanks Paul!

One of the nice things about The Blobs is that Jane makes the voices of the individual Blobs so much more realistic and distinctive than other voices you often hear on childrens programs. The voice she chooses for a Blob is often also very befitting the character of the Blob. Grubby Grey e.g. has a very dull voice (he sounds like John Mayor someone has said...), Fizzy Orange has a very cheerful voice and Royal Blue, the king, sounds quite authorative.

The stories are actually quite nice, apparently also for adults since I enjoyed them too. Though, I don't know whether with me watching Live & kicking every Saturday morning, I can be considered an adult...

One story for instance is about Grubby Grey, a Caterpilar Blob, to whom the world is very colourless. Other Blobs invite him to play football with them (he gets to wear a coloured shirt!), but, being a caterpillar, he keeps tripping over his own legs, making him even more depressed. Also the failing of his tries to fly like Canary Yellow can, doesn't help his mood one single bit. When later Grubby Grey has gone missing, Royal Blue, the king of Paintbox Land, sends out a search party. They find some kind of cocoon, from which Grubby appears. But he's not a grubby caterpillar anymore, he's become a colourfull butterfly!

The other two stories I've seen are about Poppy Red making the winning statue when a competition is needed to get Royal Blue a statue in time for the visit of the king of Pencilcase Land, and Grumbly Green with his pointed head going in search of a fitting sun-hat and finding it at Floury White's bakery in the shape of some donuts.

The series is now over and it seems to me that it's difficult to make a new series, given that each episode involved inventing one or two totally new voices. There are only that many completely distinctive voices that you can invent...
