(synopsis by Paul Persen)
This was Jim Cartwright's first play (he later wrote The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice) and one of Jane's earliest excursions into theatre and TV. It's a portrayal of one night in the life of a street in a small Lancashire town, and features his characteristic mixture of gritty realism and dreamlike lyricism. According to the cast list Jane played three parts in the theatre production, but I don't think this was the case in the TV adaptation (I watched it at the time, but it was so long ago I don't remember). Jane's main character was called Louise; but she was also Clare - one half of an unemployed couple who hide away in bed and starve themselves to death; and Valerie, a character who only appears once - in a monologue talking about her ambivalent feelings towards her husband.
This is theatre play which was later adapted for TV. One of the two or both are from 1987.
(if this is incorrect, please tell me)
I have not seen the play in either version, nor do I have it on video.
